Every trip brings the same uncertainty around mobile data. Will everything work seamlessly, or will it turn into an avoidable hassle?
Getting a local SIM often involves finding a store, going through registration steps, and hoping the plan performs the way it was described. Roaming is simpler, but costs can add up quickly, and usage is not always predictable.
To avoid both of those scenarios, I used the aloSIM eSIM as the only active data connection on my phone during my time in Slovenia.
I relied on it for navigation, messaging, social media, streaming, hotspot tethering, and even tested its optional calling feature.
This review reflects that full experience, including registration hiccups, activation, network performance, speed test results, and how consistent the connection felt in everyday use.
The verdict: aloSIM delivered reliable 5G/LTE data and a unique free calling feature, but the registration process was frustrating and initial activation was slightly slower than expected.
⭐ Rating: 4.5/5
aloSIM offers prepaid, country-specific data packages with fixed data allowances and validity periods.
For Slovenia, I chose a 1 GB plan valid for 7 days, priced at $4.50.
Since I was there for two days, 1 GB covered everything I needed. I mostly used the data for maps, messaging apps, calls, and regular browsing.
Below is a snapshot of the aloSIM data plans available for Slovenia at the time of testing.
The table outlines each data allowance, how long the plan remains active, and the upfront cost. This makes it easier to match a plan to your trip duration and expected usage.
| Data option | Validity | Price |
| 1 GB | 7 days | $4.50 |
| 2 GB | 15 days | $6.50 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $8.00 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $13.00 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $19.00 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $34.00 |
| Unlimited | 10 days | $32.00 |
Plans and pricing verdict: aloSIM offers flexible data tiers that work well for both short visits and longer stays, with pricing that feels reasonable for the convenience provided.

I installed aloSIM on my iPhone and completed the setup process directly through the app. Below is the full process from registration to activation.
I searched for aloSIM in the App Store and installed the app on my device (iPhone 15).

This is where I ran into the first issue. I tried registering with two different email addresses, but the verification codes never arrived despite resending them multiple times.
I then attempted to sign in with Google. I was able to access the app, but every time I selected the 1 GB Slovenia plan and tapped the checkout button, the app logged me out.
Finally, I signed in using Apple. That method worked without errors and allowed me to proceed.
Inside the app, I selected Slovenia and chose the 1 GB plan valid for 7 days.
After successfully logging in with Apple, I completed the payment. The eSIM appeared instantly in my account under My active plans.
Inside the app, I was presented with three installation methods: automatic installation, scanning a QR code, or manual setup.
I selected the automatic option because it seemed like the fastest and most straightforward choice.
The app guided me through the process directly on my phone, and the installation itself was simple.
Nevertheless, the other two options also included detailed, user-friendly step-by-step instructions for those who prefer scanning a code or completing the setup manually.
Activation and connecting to the network took a little over two minutes, which felt slightly slower compared to other eSIMs I have used.
After installation, I renamed the eSIM to make it easier to identify in my phone settings.
I enabled the line for data and calls and turned on data roaming.
Activation verdict: Account creation was frustrating, but installation and activation were straightforward and relatively fast.

Most of the time, my phone was connected to either LTE or 5G. Speeds were solid, and overall performance remained stable throughout the trip.
I ran a test using Speedtest by Ookla to measure actual performance on mobile data.
The test recorded a download speed of 61.54 Mbps and an upload speed of 7.52 Mbps.
Download performance was strong and more than sufficient for navigation, streaming, and file downloads.
The upload speed was significantly lower, but it was still more than sufficient for messaging and social media uploads.
In daily use, the connection felt responsive and dependable.
I relied on Google Maps to get around the town of Ptuj.
Maps loaded quickly, directions updated without delay, and rerouting worked as expected.
I didn’t experience frozen screens or long loading times while moving between locations.
Navigation felt smooth and accurate during the entire trip.

I used WhatsApp as my primary communication app during the trip.
Text messages went through immediately. Voice notes were delivered without delay. I made several voice calls and a few short video calls, and all of them were stable and clear.
There were no sudden disconnects, no echo, and no awkward pauses during conversations.
When I shared photos and short videos, they uploaded quickly and without any errors.
I didn’t use aloSIM for long streaming sessions, but I did watch a few short videos casually, which reflects how most people use mobile data while traveling.
I tested YouTube mainly at 720p and 1080p. Videos started playing right away and continued without buffering.
The quality remained consistent, and I did not notice unexpected drops in resolution.
TikTok videos also loaded instantly and played smoothly without interruptions.
Overall, aloSIM delivered a steady and dependable connection throughout my time in Slovenia.
Once everything was properly configured, I did not have to think about the connection. There were no random drops, no repeated reconnecting, and no interruptions during normal use.
Performance verdict: aloSIM handled navigation, communication, streaming, and hotspot use reliably, making it a solid option for short trips.
⭐ Rating: 4.5/5
I tested the hotspot feature by connecting my laptop to my phone.
I downloaded several documents and sent a few emails. Files downloaded quickly, and the connection remained stable during use. There were no unexpected drops or interruptions.
For light work tasks, the hotspot performed reliably.
Hotspot verdict: Stable and practical for connecting a laptop and handling basic work.

One feature that sets aloSIM apart is the option to get a free phone number. Data-only eSIMs are common, but plans that include a calling option are rare.
You can request activation of this feature inside the app under the Rewards section. The app asked me to provide my email address so they could send login details.
I received instructions to download an app called Hushed. The email also included a temporary password.
After installing the app, I logged in using my email and the temporary password without problems.
The app offered U.S., Canadian, U.K., and Puerto Rico numbers. Only U.S. and Canadian numbers were free. I selected one of the free options.
I made two short calls lasting around 20 to 30 seconds each. Both calls were clear, with no audio delay or connection problems. SMS messages also worked as expected.
The only drawback is that you need to install a separate app to use this feature. Still, for a free number and calls, it worked surprisingly well.
Calling feature verdict: A rare and useful addition that works smoothly, with the minor inconvenience of needing an extra app.
⭐ Rating: 4.5/5
My only interaction with support happened during setup when the internet did not work initially (due to a mistake I made).
I used the in-app chat. The response was quick and direct.
The representative clearly explained what I needed to change in my settings, and once I followed the instructions, everything started working.
The issue was resolved within minutes, and the experience felt efficient and professional.
Customer support verdict: Fast, helpful, and effective when needed.

Yes, but it is not enabled by default. You can request a free phone number inside the app through the rewards section.
The number works through the Hushed app and supports both calls and SMS. Free numbers are currently available for the U.S. and Canada.
Yes. I connected my laptop and downloaded documents without issues. The hotspot connection remained stable during light work and general browsing.
Yes. aloSIM is operated by a Canada-based company, which is also behind the Hushed calling app used for its phone number feature.
Pricing depends on the destination and data allowance you choose. For Slovenia, I purchased a 1 GB plan valid for 7 days for $4.50.
Larger data packages and unlimited options are also available at higher price points.
No. You can keep your primary SIM active for calls and SMS while using aloSIM for mobile data.
