eSIM Cards

Does iPhone 8 support eSIM or do you need an upgrade?

The iPhone 8 does not support eSIM. The eSIM functionality was first introduced by Apple with the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, released in 2018, while the iPhone 8 was launched in 2017. This means that if you own an iPhone 8 and want to switch to eSIM, you’ll need to consider an upgrade.

eSIM technology offers more convenience and flexibility for mobile users, especially for travelers. After all, with eSIM, there’s no need to swap physical SIM cards when traveling abroad or switching carriers, so it’s a more seamless solution. If you need flexibility for your mobile plans, then an upgrade is on the cards.

Aside from eSIM, newer iPhones also offer several other improvements, such as better camera systems and advanced safety features. If you’re looking to future-proof your device, an upgrade is the natural choice. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about iPhone eSIM compatibility.

Is my iPhone eSIM compatible?

While the iPhone 8 does not support eSIM, newer models after the iPhone XS all have this functionality. In fact, all models from the iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only in the USA. However, eSIM-compatibility can vary depending not only the model, but where in the world you purchased your iPhone.

There are two ways to check if your current iPhone is eSIM-compatible.

Checking if your iPhone supports eSIM through settings

The easiest way to check if your iPhone supports eSIM is by heading to your phone’s settings. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open your Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Cellular (or Mobile Data, depending on the region).
  3. If your iPhone supports eSIM, you will see a section that allows you to Add Cellular Plan or see Cellular Plans listed. This indicates that your phone is eSIM-compatible.

If you’re using an iPhone 8, it is definitely not eSIM compatible. However, for the iPhone XS and beyond, this feature being available is the key indicator for compatibility.

Checking if your iPhone supports eSIM by dialing *#06#

Another quick method to check compatibility is by dialing a special code that reveals your phone’s details.

  1. Open the Phone app and go to the dialer screen.
  2. Dial #06#, the universal code for checking your IMEI number.
  3. A screen will appear showing your IMEI and eSIM details if applicable.
  4. If your phone is eSIM compatible, you will see an IMEI number for the physical SIM as well as a separate eSIM IMEI. If your iPhone only shows one IMEI, it’s a sign that eSIM functionality is unavailable.

For iPhone 8 users, you will only see one IMEI number since the device does not support eSIM. However, this method will help confirm eSIM compatibility for later models.

Do you need to upgrade your iPhone 8?

If you’re currently using an iPhone 8, you might be wondering whether it’s time to upgrade, especially with the increasing use of eSIM technology. In particular, if you travel frequently, an eSIM-compatible iPhone could offer a huge convenience boost. While the iPhone 8 is a solid device, it lacks support for eSIM, a feature that can simplify your travel experience. With eSIM, you can easily switch between carriers, purchase international plans without changing your SIM card, and stay connected without the hassle of swapping physical SIMs.

eSIMs are gaining popularity, and many newer smartphones are now designed for eSIM-only use in some markets. Upgrading to an eSIM-capable phone, like the iPhone XS or newer, can not only provide flexibility but also enhance your travel experience by letting you seamlessly activate a local data plan. Plus, as we move into an era where more phones are built with eSIM support, you’re future-proofing your device by upgrading now.

Beyond eSIM, there are other benefits to an upgrade. Newer iPhones feature enhanced cameras, 5G connectivity, better security, and longer battery life. There’s also the Emergency SOS features, which can be critical for personal safety, and faster chipsets for improved performance.

While iPhones are the go-to for many, it’s also worth considering non-iPhone options. Android devices like the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy offer eSIM functionality, often at a more affordable price point. Whether you stick with Apple or decide to go with a different brand, upgrading your device ensures you’ll enjoy better features and functionality.

Other eSIM compatible iPhones

If you’re looking to upgrade from the iPhone 8, there are several eSIM-compatible iPhone models that are worth considering.

There are plenty of eSIM-compatible iPhones to suit all budgets. However, you can also explore the second-hand market to get an even better deal.

And remember, there are other eSIM-compatible phones beyond Apple that may offer better features for your needs, so it’s always worth exploring your options.

Activating eSIM on your new iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 doesn’t support eSIM, so you won’t be able to activate this feature on your device. However, if you’re upgrading to a newer iPhone model, the process of activating an eSIM is fairly straightforward.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Cellular, then Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code sent by your eSIM provider.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete activation.

This process is fairly similar whether you upgrade to a new iPhone or switch to Android, but the exact steps can vary by device.

Converting physical SIM to eSIM for iPhone 8

Unfortunately, you cannot convert a physical SIM to an eSIM on iPhone 8 because this model doesn’t support eSIM technology. However, if you’re upgrading to a newer iPhone, the process is simple.

Contact your carrier to request the conversion. In some cases, you may be able to do it through the carrier’s app or directly through your iPhone settings. Typically, you’ll need to go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan, and follow the instructions to either scan a QR code or enter an activation code from your carrier.

If you purchase a new iPhone 14 or later from the USA, then you will need to convert to an eSIM as these models don’t have a physical SIM card tray. Simply follow the steps above, or purchase a new plan through your carrier when you purchase your iPhone.
