What is Google Fi and how does it work?

Google Fi is a mobile service by Google that offers full phone functionality—including calls, texts, and high-speed data—using eSIM across the United States and more than 200 international destinations.

It runs on T‑Mobile’s 4G LTE and 5G network within the U.S., with 5G access also available in over 92 countries for compatible devices.

Activation requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and is completed through the Google Fi app or website.

The app also manages eSIM transfers. Google Fi includes built-in security features such as VPN by Google, spam call blocking, and smart data controls like Bill Protection and hotspot sharing.

Why consider Google Fi eSIM?

Google Fi eSIM is ideal for U.S.-based users who want one mobile plan that works both in the United States and while traveling internationally—without needing to swap physical SIM cards.

It’s especially useful for digital nomads and frequent travelers who want a single solution for global connectivity, including calls, texts, and data.

One limitation: international usage is designed for short-term travel only. After 50 days abroad, Fi will notify you, and if you're still outside the U.S. after another 30 days, your international data may be paused until you reconnect within the United States.

Google Fi eSIM country availability

Google Fi offers coverage in over 200 destinations. All plans include service in the United States, and most also cover Canada and Mexico.

When traveling abroad, coverage is automatic through local partner carriers, so there’s no need to switch plans or purchase regional data packages.

Google Fi eSIM: data and pricing

Google Fi offers several mobile plans, but when it comes to international travel, only the Flexible and Unlimited Premium plans offer full global data access.

The Flexible plan charges per gigabyte and is best for light or occasional travelers who prefer to pay only for what they use.

The Unlimited Premium plan includes a generous high-speed data allowance across 200+ destinations, making it a better fit for long-term international users.

Flexible plan

RegionData Cost
Canada & Mexico$10 per GB
Europe (e.g. France, Germany)$10 per GB
Asia (e.g. Japan, South Korea)$10 per GB
Australia & New Zealand$10 per GB
Latin America & Africa (e.g. Brazil, South Africa)$10 per GB

Note: Flexible plan includes a $20/month base fee for calls and texts. Data is charged separately at $10/GB. Speeds slow after 15 GB unless you re-enable high-speed.

Unlimited premium plan

RegionData Cost
Canada & Mexico$65/month (counts toward 100 GB U.S. cap)
Europe (e.g. France, Germany)$65/month (includes up to 50 GB high-speed)
Asia (e.g. Japan, South Korea)$65/month (includes up to 50 GB high-speed)
Australia & New Zealand$65/month (includes up to 50 GB high-speed)
Latin America & Africa (e.g. Brazil, South Africa)$65/month (includes up to 50 GB high-speed)

Note: After 100 GB in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—or 50 GB abroad—speeds slow to 256 kbps. No extra charges apply beyond these limits.

Google Fi eSIM network coverage

In the United States, Google Fi operates on T-Mobile’s network. It offers 5G in most urban and suburban areas, while LTE covers more remote regions. Real-world 5G speeds on compatible devices average around 186 Mbps, though this depends on signal strength and location.

Internationally, Google Fi connects to local carrier networks in over 200 destinations. No SIM swaps or manual setup are required—your device will automatically connect to a supported network when you land. 5G access is available in over 92 countries for supported devices.

Google Fi eSIM features

All Google Fi plans include hotspot tethering: the Flexible plan deducts hotspot usage from your paid data allowance, while the Unlimited Premium plan includes up to 50 GB of high-speed hotspot use before throttling.

While there are no data-only plans for phones, Google Fi does provide data-only SIMs for tablets and laptops for existing customers. Only one active Google Fi eSIM is supported at a time—dual eSIM use is not possible.

High-speed data is capped at 15 GB on the Flexible plan, and 100 GB in the U.S. / 50 GB abroad on Unlimited Premium. After reaching these limits, speeds are reduced to 256 kbps.

You must use the Google Fi app to activate service and transfer your eSIM to a new device. Apple's built-in eSIM transfer feature is not compatible with Fi.

Google Fi eSIM customer reviews

Users on both the App Store and Google Play mention that Google Fi offers good value and flexible device options.

However, several reviews point out issues like limited rural coverage, no hotspot access on the Essentials plan, and problems using the service during long-term international travel.

Some users also report challenges with customer support, including delays in refunds and account reactivation.

Others found the warranty process inconvenient and said they couldn’t use their own data for tethering unless it was included in the plan.

Google Fi eSIM customer support

Google Fi offers support through the Help Center, community forums, live chat, email, and a toll-free phone line at 1‑844‑TALK‑2‑FI.

While support is reachable via multiple channels directly from the app or website, user experiences vary—some praise swift responses, while others report delays and repetitive troubleshooting.

There’s no specialized eSIM-only support team; eSIM-related issues are handled through the general Fi support system via the same channels.

Google Fi eSIM app and ease of use

The Google Fi app lets users activate their eSIM, transfer service to a new device, monitor data usage, manage account settings, add family members, and get support.

It provides step-by-step guidance for eSIM setup and transfers, with a simple, user-friendly interface designed to make mobile service management easy for all experience levels.

Google Fi eSIM alternatives

Google Fi works well if you're based in the U.S. and want a mobile plan that extends abroad—especially in over 200 supported destinations.

But compared to international eSIM providers, it’s less ideal for short-term tourists due to its U.S.-centric billing, limited plan flexibility, and postpaid model.

If you’re looking for something more travel-friendly, the options below offer simpler, prepaid plans with faster setup and fewer restrictions.

Among them, Holafly stands out for offering unlimited data with instant activation, no ID checks, and plans built specifically for travelers—not residents.

Google Fi Review FAQs

1. Does Google Fi have good coverage?

Yes, Google Fi uses T-Mobile’s network, which offers reliable 4G LTE and 5G coverage in most cities and suburbs across the U.S. Rural coverage is more limited and can vary by location.

2. Is Google Fi worth it?

Google Fi is still a good option for international travelers and users who want simple, no-contract plans with eSIM support. It’s most valuable for people who travel frequently and want full phone functionality abroad.

3. Is Google Fi good internationally?

Yes, Google Fi works in over 200 destinations with automatic network switching and no need to swap SIMs. The Unlimited Premium plan includes high-speed data abroad, while the Flexible plan charges a flat rate per gigabyte.

4. What is better than Google Fi?

For travelers who only need data and not phone service, Holafly offers easy-to-use eSIMs with unlimited data in many countries. It's a strong alternative for those who want simple, high-speed internet access without a monthly carrier plan.

5. Does Google Fi work on iPhone?

Yes, Google Fi works on most unlocked iPhones, including iPhone XR and newer, using eSIM. However, activation and eSIM transfers must be done through the Google Fi app, as Apple’s built-in transfer feature isn’t supported.
